README for HGOPHER (Hampson's Gopher) A Gopher Client For Windows 3.1 Version Beta 1.0 Please read the Copyright notices at the end of this document Welcome Here is a Gopher Client for windows 3.1. Note this is an Beta test release and as such the documentation and online help is poor. However if you would like to try it feel free and have fun! Send comments or problems to m.hampson@ic.ac.uk If you find this product useful please let me know as it gives me the will to continue. Changes since Alpha Release * Winsock version is now available * Product has been renamed since gopher was a bit generic - for want of anything better I am now calling in Hampson's Gopher or hgopher. * Telnet now spawned with IP address rather than host name (for systems without DNS) * Book marks can now be edited and created. This allows you to build your own gopher items Requirements WINSOCK VERSION * MS Windows 3.1 (not tested with Windows 3.0) Or Windows NT. * Winsock DLL and TCP/IP+Packet support layer. * See later for a list of Winsock tested versions. PC NFS VERSION * MS Windows 3.1 (not tested with Windows 3.0) * PC NFS Version 4 or version 5 (may work with other versions) NOTE: you can also use the Winsock version with PC NFS 5.0 and I suggest you do, as support for the native PC NFS version may be withdrawn at some point. Features * Bookmarks with editing * DNS capability * Vendor name lookup capability * Text, image, telnet, tn3270 capability (providing you have other public domain or PC NFS products) * Index capability * copy to file capability * No CSO support yet * No Sound support yet * No PostScript support yet (although I looks like it does) * No MIME support yet Installation Available for ANON FTP from lister.cc.ic.ac.uk Change to directory pub/wingopher and collect the files readme.txt hgopher.exe [Winsock Version] (Binary mode required) hngopher.exe [Sun PC NFS Version] (Binary mode required) Then read the readme.txt file (This file) copy the executable file to where ever you keep binaries create a program item for in from Program Manager (if you like) Execute it Troubleshooting WINSOCK VERSION The first time you start it hgopher may not be able to connect to a server or will probably connect to the wrong server Use the Options menu to config it as follows Gopher Options Set the name and path of your favorite gopher server Change the viewers to the viewers of your choice (Note that PostScript does not work yet) The default text viewer "notepad" can only view small files - change to write or something else if you wish to view larger files. Select a directory for temp files that already exists Hit the save button to save these setting between sessions Hit the OK button to use these setting now use "go home" from the command menu to get the main menu from your default gopher. Network setup Set whether you are using DNS or the Vendor look up service - If your vendor supports DNS lookup themselves I suggest you use their service as the inbuilt DNS has been shown not to work on some (most) Winsock versions. If you are using the Winsock version with PC NFS you must use the inbuilt DNS as Sun have not only not bothered to implement DNS support but their own NIS does not function with their Winsock either (at least at the release level I have). If using the inbuilt DNS remember to use IP addresses and not host names. PC NFS VERSION Make sure at least RTM is loaded before you start Windows The first time you start it hngopher may not be able to connect to a server or will probably connect to the wrong server Use the Options menu to config it as follows Gopher Options Set the name and path of your favorite gopher server Change the viewers to the viewers of your choice (Note that PostScript does not work yet) The default text viewer "notepad" can only view small files - change to write or something else if you wish to view larger files. Select a directory for temp files that already exists Hit the save button to save these setting between sessions Hit the OK button to use these setting now use "go home" from the command menu to get the main menu from your default gopher. Network setup Set whether you are using DNS or the Vendor name lookup - with Sun this is NIS - DNS is better. Add up to 3 local DNS servers and your local domain Hit OK. Remember to use IP addresses not hostnames. Usage I am assuming its pretty easy to use (Sorry!) - but here are some of the non obvious function To fetch an item double click on it To get to the previous item - double click previous item You can highlight an item with a single click and explicitly fetch it from the command menu (previous is also a command menu item) or save it as a book mark While fetching an item a transfer state button appears giving the connection status. While waiting to connect windows freezes (this is not true of the Winsock version in that case just this application is busy) during the transfer windows should behave normally. You can click on this button to abort the transfer. You can have up to 3 transfers going but only the last is active. History (command menu) shows you where you have been Flip (command menu) or right hand mouse button takes you back to the main menu. Flip or right hand mouse button from the main menu takes you to the bookmark menu. you can load and save bookmarks to files - You can also select a bookmark file to load on startup. Menu's are cached - default time 10 minutes you can change this from gopher options Winsock implementations tested against Thanks to alot of help from my Alpha testers on the Net I have been able to verify that the gopher works with several Winsock implementations. The state of play is as follows Lanera - Verified to work Distinct - Verified to work Netmange - Believed to work PC NFS 5.0 - Verified to work PCTCP 2.11 - Verified to work PCTCP 2.2 - Verified to work - However if you get a message like PCTCPAPI052: get_kernel_info: Bad net_dope structure 0x1ae01197, try getting a newer version of their winsoc dll via ANON ftp vax.ftp.com:/pub/winsockapi/FTPSoftware/winsock.dll. SuperTcp 3.56 - Verified to work Windows NT - Verified to work under Beta version If you find it works (or doesn't work) on a different Implementation please let me know. Known Bugs Bug #2 ??? prefix for CSO object is incorrect Bug #4 Problem co existing with Vista Exceed Bug #5 Inbuilt DNS fails under some Winsock Implementations Bug #6 Bombs sometimes if you exit while transfer of directory in progress Bug #7 Under Distinct - randomly crashes occasionally Requests for Enhancements (lots - would be interested in feedback as to priority) Better GUI Stop IDLE/RCV flashing in no data On connection abort don't show data .... In the Pipe Line If there is enough interest in the product the following might happen. * CSO and other gopher types supported (do people really need CSO) * News support * A Decent displayer to replace notepad (Any out there) * A groovier GUI * True multi transfer capability * Non blocking connects * Online help * Gopher+ features ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CopyRight notices This version of gopher is not available in source code form, however future versions maybe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Copyright (c) 1993 Martyn Hampson * All rights reserved. * * Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without * modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions * are met: * 1.
